Introduction

Open to children aged 8 to 14, our musical comedy workshops are back this summer! From 9am to 4pm (and until 6pm on Fridays). These classes offer students the opportunity to learn about the multiple domains of singing, acting and dance, through a performance staged during the week.

Our experienced teachers take care of the lunch break, which each student is invited to bring. We ensure a quality atmosphere and group cohesion, with the emphasis on improvisation and performance.

The highlight of this enriching week will be a show on Friday 5.30 p.m. to 6.00 p.m., open to families, parents and all those who wish to discover the prowess that a group of young people can accomplish in the space of a short week.

What do students learn? The program

Skills Developed

This program is designed to provide an enriching experience for children and teenagers. Here are the specific skills students will develop in each area:

Singing: Students will learn essential vocal techniques for singing in musical theatre. This includes projection, breath control and emotional interpretation. Sandrina, our professional singer with a degree in pedagogy from the Haute Ecole de Musique de Lausanne, will guide students through these technical aspects, enabling them to appropriate their songs to the best of their ability.

Theater and Improvisation: Under the guidance of Mirko Rochat, a Swiss-Romande comedian, students will be introduced to the art of improvisation. They will learn to create spontaneous scenes, develop their stage presence and interact with their teammates in a confident, improvised way.

Dance: Musical theatre specialist Melie will teach the basics of dance. Students will learn movements and choreographies that will enrich their overall performance. She also organizes the staging and the pooling of different techniques and areas to arrive at a coherent finale.

Each skill is taught in the context of a performance staged during the week, enabling students to put into practice what they have learned. This vacation workshop format offers a unique opportunity for children and parents to discover the fascinating world of musical theatre.

There are many reasons why you might want to get into musical theatre. First of all, it's an art form that combines several disciplines, namely singing, dancing, acting and music. And then there's the stage aspect, because the ultimate goal is to get on stage! The shows are complete and rich in emotion. They can reach a wide audience. What's more, taking part in such an adventure can be exciting and enriching for young people, as it gives them the opportunity to work with professionals in the field - our teachers - who are directors, choreographers and vocal coaches. At the same time, students develop skills in performance, collaboration and expression, strengthening their social skills. Vocal coaching, an important element of our program, is essential for participants, as they'll be singing while on the move! Improving vocal technique, tone, intonation and diction is therefore essential. In addition, vocal coaching enables actors to better understand how to use their voice to convey emotion and expression in a song. Finally, musical theatre can provide a memorable and fun experience for audience members, who can enjoy the story, the music and the actors' performance.

Absolutely. Our arts school organizes weekly musical comedy classes in Lausanne. To find out more, visit our dedicated page by clicking here. In addition to musical theatre, our school also offers weekly singing and acting classes. These allow young people who wish to intensify their practice and improve their training during the year, beyond a vacation workshop, to get as involved as they wish.

In the arts, acting and musical theater courses have different objectives, content and physical requirements. Drama courses generally focus on acting, stagecraft and text analysis, while musical theatre courses concentrate on dance, singing, musical interpretation and choreography. Musical theatre courses are often more physically demanding than acting courses. Acting classes are suitable for different levels of ability, while musical theatre classes, although open to beginners, are often more demanding and require more involvement, as the child or teenager has to develop skills in singing, dancing and acting at the same time. The choice between the two types of discipline therefore depends on the interests and objectives of each individual. In the case of musical theatre, taking a course during the vacations can be a good way of reinforcing your skills.

Before determining whether a young person has talent for a discipline, it's important to look at their passion and desire. A young person will derive satisfaction if he's passionate or at least motivated by what he's doing. For us, this is the first step. From there, there are a few signs to watch out for. First of all, if he likes to play and make others laugh, this can be a good indicator of his comic potential. What's more, if he likes to participate in or go to plays, role plays or one-man shows, this can also be a sign that he's inclined to give it a try. Observing how he interacts with others, how he tells stories and what he says can also be clues to his potential as a future comedian. If you think he has talent, you can encourage him to take part in acting lessons or activities with other peers his own age. All this will help your child develop his or her acting, improvisation and speaking skills, as well as boosting his or her self-confidence. It's also important to bear in mind that even if he or she doesn't become a professional actor, the skills acquired will still be beneficial in all areas of life. After all, creativity, self-confidence, the ability to work as part of a team and self-expression are all excellent assets in everyday life.
